Artist Announce #1
Subsonic Music Festival 2017
Just last week we revealed our brand new theme for ’17 to you all, with an all-encompassing yet enigmatic catchphrase “where everything is everything, but not always as it seems.” So it makes perfect sense that our first artist announce for the year would bring you a little bit of everything, from all across the globe. And thus across the globe we travel…
Leading the pack, we are pleased as pie to be importing an absolute master maestro. A UK acid-house & techno export of truly legendary status, with accolades like production for Primal Scream and creator of cult track for an equally cult film “Trainspotting” – we bring you Andrew Weatherall. And just in case you thought that was impressive enough, he’ll be treating us to not only a solo show, but also a celestial turntable duet with his also-British partner in crime, Sean Johnston. They’ll be slinging a slew of astral stripped-back disco & funk, under the moniker under which they are collectively known as: A Love from Outer Space.
Now we sail across the North Sea to Europe. Spearheading the German contingent is a lady who has made a name for herself in all corners on the globe (and for good reason, with residencies in Ibiza and the infamous London “Fuse” events) – the tremendously talented tINI. Joining her is Madmotormiquel, URSL label boss & Bachstelzen bastion, whom we’ve invited back after an outrageously good Saturday session on our Paradiso stage last year. He’s joined by another Sub fave, Katermukke big tamale Dirty Doering, who smashed up our Main Stage Sunday session a few years ago with a relentless selection of epic rolling house rhythms.
And while this one resides in Berlin, he’s really a Frenchman through-and-through. He’s also become somewhat of a spiritual guide of Subsonic Music Festival, regularly treating our Paradiso stage to his masterful dubby chuggy housed-out magic. So once more in ’17 we gladly welcome back our good friend, multi-instrumentalist, producer, DJ and owner of fresh vinyl-only imprint ‘WuDubs’, Alexkid.
Now we nip across the border to Poland, to be joined by two artsy animals that have a matching reputation behind the turntables to boot. Complete with pet record label (literally – they own the respected imprint Pets Recordings), we bring you two producers of the finest pedigree, Catz ’n Dogz.
Then head a little further south and we’re joined by Barac, a Romanian with a reputation for immaculate productions and enchanting his audiences. A cheeky swing across to Italy then brings us to highly-skilled selector Francesco Del Garda, who’s been deftly blending UK garage, house, maverick techno and electro since the early 90’s, and has a penchant for a beaming smile and charisma to match behind the wheels of steel.
So now that we’re into the swing of things, funking it up is 90’s British export and techno scene veteran whose 3 decade journey has taken him through the realms of tech-funk, ghettofunk, house music and beyond – the magnificent Mr G. We then boogie across the Atlantic to the US to rendezvous with one more don, the funkmaster & Soul People Music label-boss, Fred P from the Big Apple.
But what do we have here? As also residing in New York is another house & techno treasure. We are joined by Russian MTV star turned acclaimed DJ, Julia Govor, who’s been tearing up dance floors across the globe with her diverse range of wonky stripped-back house which crescendos to straight-up slammin’ techno. And journeying west to join her from Detroit in rounding off the techno tip is Resident Advisor’s Best Live Act of 2008 and first American DJ to ever take up permanent residence in Berlin – the inaugural Daniel Bell.
Whew, what a ride. So now we head back homeward for li’l to round out our first artist announce of the year with a bassier homegrown vibe. Back down in the Southern Hemisphere, we pop the question again to Subsonic Main Stage favourite, Opiuo. A Kiwi now residing in Australia, he’s joined by another Melbournian who brings a similar flavour, a street-corner beatboxer turned internationally revered artist, the one-man-band virtuoso who is just about as real as it gets, Dub FX.
Well, that just about wraps it up for round one. So after that little round the world trip we put up our feet, check out all the little artist video and audio goodies we’ve caringly gathered together and popped online for our 2017 Subsonicians, and dream of starting summer once again with an unforgettable first weekend of December in the Downs.
